Sainte-Marie-aux-Mines, France

Ste. Marie-aux-Mines has been Bruchsal’s twin town since July 12, 1989. It has about 6,000 inhabitants and is based in Alsace at the foot of the Vosges Mountains. The twin town is predominantly associated with the Untergrombach urban district. In the 1970’s a group of soldiers from Bruchsal began the restoration of a decayed military cemetery on the outskirts of Sainte-Marie-aux-Mines, where more than 1,000 German soldiers are buried. Since then, the effort has been maintained by clubs from Untergrombach which in turn cemented the friendship between the two towns. In 1989 during the 1200th anniversary of Untergrombach an official partnership agreement was signed between the two communities. Because of its close proximity to Bruchsal, and the existing twin town relationship, Sainte-Marie-aux-Mines is an attractive and inviting destination.

Due to ancient mining, the valley where Sainte-Marie-aux-Mines is located is today often called the Val d’Argent (Silver Valley). A visit to the region should always include a visit to the historical silver mines and the international mineral exchange market. Textiles are the largest industry in the town. The annual European Patchwork Meeting and the Textile and Fashion Fair are held in Sainte-Marie-aux-Mines.
